Skin Deep!

Skin Deep!

Lately, my wife has taken to occupying my daughter’s time with ‘play’ makeup as she gets ready in the mornings. As scary as it is for me, my daughter loves to pretend to put makeup on in the mornings with her mom! I still have my fingers crossed about turning her into a tomboy but have to admit, she sure gets easily occupied with this stuff.

Anyways, so as I was doing my usual internet surfing (yes, I ashamedly use that term) I came across a great website that I found very interesting and thought I’d share it. Skin Deep is a cosmetics database that provides you with safety ratings for a wide range of cosmetics and personal care products on the market.

On average, consumers use about 10 personal care products containing 126 ingredients per day.  Even more worrisome, infants are exposed to an average of 27 personal care product ingredients that have been found to be NOT safe for developing bodies. Pound for pound, kids are exposed to more contaminants in air, water, food, and personal care products than adults. Immature organ systems are often less capable of fending off chemical assaults.

That’s A LOT of exposure to various chemicals and potential toxins. I think it’s extremely important to examine exactly what you’re using! For the record, the government does not require health studies or pre-market testing for these products.

It’s genius – now I can easily access the safety rating of thousands of products! It allows me to make a more informed decision next time I purchase a product for myself and more importantly, my family.

You should check it out too! http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/
