What if the biggest source of inflammation in your life wasn’t coming from your food… but from the words you repeat to yourself every day?
Imagine carrying around someone who criticized you every minute of every day. Every decision you made. Every mistake. Every time you looked in the mirror. Every time you stepped on the scale.
Imagine they whispered things like…
“You’re failing.”
“You’ll never stick with it.”
“Why even bother?”
Most people would walk away from that person.
Yet millions of us wake up every morning and become that voice for ourselves.
And then we wonder why healing feels so hard.
One of the most common conversations I have with patients has nothing to do with food, or hormones, or gut health.
Instead, it sounds something like this…
“I know what I should be doing.”
“I just can’t stay consistent.”
“I always end up back where I started.”
“I’ve failed too many times.”
What’s fascinating is that they’re usually describing themselves, not reality.
The body listens to far more than the food you eat. In fact, we know that it responds to the emotional environment you create every single day. This is where love languages become incredibly important.
Most people think, love languages are only about romantic relationships.
I don’t. At the Functional Health Institute, we use them as another lens to understand what helps someone’s nervous system feel safe, supported, and capable of change. Because when someone’s primary love language is Words of Affirmation, encouragement isn’t simply “nice.” It’s nourishment!
If this is your dominant love language, your nervous system thrives on words that build belief.
That doesn’t mean you need constant compliments from other people.
It means your internal dialogue has tremendous influence over your physiology.
Think about what many people repeat every day.
“I’m exhausted.”
“My body is broken.”
“I’ll never lose weight.”
“My hormones are a mess.”
“I’m getting old.”
“I’ve tried everything.”
Now ask yourself…
If your brain hears those statements hundreds of times each week, what does your nervous system begin preparing for?
Failure.
Threat.
Hopelessness.
And while positive thinking alone won’t heal disease, chronic negative self-talk absolutely creates an internal environment that makes healing much harder.
Your brain cannot separate a real threat from one it rehearses repeatedly. Read that again!
Every critical thought becomes another signal that the world is unsafe.
When that happens… Stress hormones remain elevated. Recovery slows. Inflammation becomes easier to maintain. Sleep suffers. Motivation disappears.
Eventually people conclude…
“I just don’t have enough willpower.”
But willpower was never the problem.
This is one of the most hidden forms of self sabotage.
It rarely looks dramatic.
Instead, it sounds like…
“I’ll probably quit anyway.”
“I’ll start Monday.”
“One meal won’t matter.”
“I’ve already messed today up.”
What you need to know is these aren’t harmless thoughts. They’re instructions.
The brain is constantly trying to make your behaviour match your identity.
If your identity is…
“I’m someone who always fails.”
Your behaviours will eventually prove you right.
Not because you’re weak but because your brain loves consistency. Even when that consistency hurts you.
In Functional Medicine, we spend a lot of time removing things that create inflammation.
Poor nutrition. Toxins. Hidden infections. Blood sugar dysregulation.
But we also have to ask another important question…
What is creating inflammation emotionally?
If every day begins with criticism, if every setback becomes proof that you’re broken, if every mirror becomes an opportunity to attack yourself. Your body never receives the message that it’s safe.
Then healing becomes very difficult no matter how many nutrients you take.
Healing requires a nervous system that perceives safety.
And sometimes safety begins with changing the conversation happening inside your own mind.
This isn’t about standing in front of a mirror repeating affirmations you don’t believe.
Your brain won’t buy them.
Instead, begin by changing the evidence you’re collecting.
Instead of…
“I always fail.”
Try…
“I’ve struggled with consistency before, but I’m learning what my body actually needs.”
One statement creates shame.
The other creates possibility.
For one week, write down every negative statement you say about yourself.
Don’t change them.
Just notice them.
Most people are shocked by how often they criticize themselves.
Awareness always comes before change.
Every evening, write down three things you did well that day.
Not perfection.
Evidence.
Because confidence isn’t something you think your way into. It’s something you collect.
Surround yourself with people who speak possibility into your life.
Not false optimism.
Truth.
Sometimes we need someone else’s belief long enough to rebuild our own.
One of the biggest differences in how we approach health at the Functional Health Institute is that we don’t stop at lab work. This is because labs tell us what is happening. However, they rarely explain the WHY. Why someone continues to repeat the same patterns, even after they know exactly what to do.
Healing isn’t simply biochemical. It’s behavioural, emotional, and neurological.
When we uncover a person’s love language, we often discover a missing ingredient that no supplement can replace.
Because real healing happens when the body has both the biological resources and the emotional environment to thrive.
That’s why our goal isn’t simply to help people lose weight, improve digestion, or balance hormones. It’s to help them become the kind of person whose daily habits naturally support vibrant health.
If you constantly find yourself saying…
“I know what to do, but I just can’t seem to stick with it.”
Don’t assume you need more discipline.
You may simply be missing a form of nourishment your nervous system has been asking for all along.
This month, spend a few days paying attention to one thing:
How do you speak to yourself when nobody else is listening?
The answer may reveal one of the biggest obstacles standing between where you are today and the health you’re capable of creating.
If this resonated with you, I’d love to hear your thoughts.
